Success Criteria
When I am reading I will:
  1. Read texts through more than once so I understand it really well.
  2. Use my knowledge of words to work out how to read difficult words.
  3. Read topic sentences at the start of paragraphs to see what the paragraph is about.
  4. Skim and scan for keywords to help me understand what the text is about.
  5. Use the my knowledge of the text and words, or a dictionary, to work out the meaning of difficult words.
  6. Ask myself questions about the text, especially if I do not understand it.
  7. Ask a buddy or teacher for help if I am stuck.

WALT use interesting words and phrases (vocabulary) in our writing.






WALT to spell everyday (and/or difficult) words accurately in our writing.
Success Criteria:
We have:
  • underlined any words we are unsure of the spelling of.
  • searched how to spell these words:
    • in the dictionary.
    • in the spell write.
    • on the online dictionary.
    • on the classroom walls.
  • sounded the words out
  • used the known part of the words to help spell the rest
  • broken the words into syllables and tried to spell them.
  • used a rhyming word to help spell them.
  • asked an ‘expert’ speller.




WALT use the correct structure and language when writing for different purposes.
Success Criteria:
We have:
  • chosen what type of writing(genre) we should use for our purpose eg letter, poem, narrative, report etc
  • used genre posters or writing exemplars to find out what the piece of writing should contain eg
    • information about who, what, when, where, why and how.
    • tense - present, past or future
    • tone of language eg story telling, factual, poetry
    • words connecting the text eg joining words, connections between paragraphs
    • vocabulary used - descriptive, technical etc
  • used language that is appropriate for that writing and the audience eg check with an exemplar.

WALT find perimeters, areas and volumes of simple shapes
Success Criteria
We have:
  • Calculated perimeter by adding up the measurements of each side of the shape. We have put the correct unit of measurement after the total.
  • Calculated area by multiplying the length by the width of the shape and recorded the answer as a squared measurement.
  • Calculated volume by multiplying the length by the width by the height of the shape and recorded the answer as a cubic measurement.
